Tschuku Tschuku
Zilin
for the first and future African sonic stars
Republic of NamibiaTschuku Tschuku, a band featured around the performer Nashilongweshipwe Mushaandja, is dedicated to a repertoire which combines afro-beat, jazz and shambo. Like lead singer Mushaandja, who created a Collective Listening evening for last year's festival, Tschuku Tschuku sees music as a room for possible new connections. Sound represents a bridge to renewal, healing and the future – but also to the past of an Africa without frontiers continually renewing itself both at home and abroad. The title of the performance project «Zilin» refers to an experimental voice technique from Benin, which not only plays an important role in voodoo rituals but is also applied by African musicians such as Angélique Kidjo.
«Zilin» can be understood as a restitution act. With performances taking place in Namibia and South Africa before the project starts its tour throughout Europe, it offers African youth the opportunity to rediscover sounds which have been stored away in colonial archives for far too long. The ensemble has uncovered material from various collections and archives, using it as a starting point to offer new interpretations and approaches with a wide spectrum of sounds. (zts)
