Auf Zucker
Ein Selbstversuch in sieben Süssigkeiten
GermanyFor children and families
Can you dance sugar? What do we experience on a sugar high and why do we want more of the stuff? Together with the audience, four performers playfully investigate such questions and finally touch on serious issues such as colonialism and slavery. The history of sugar is far from sweet but rather bitter. This does not diminish the fun of this theatrical research experience but gives the candy floss a somewhat reflective aftertaste.
The splendid Fundus Theater from Hamburg call their work «theatre of research» or «scenic laboratory». This sounds rather serious. But with their latest production «Auf Zucker», the company demonstrates once again how effortlessly art can be combined with science to create an inspiring performance. At the Theater Spektakel 2020, Fun- dus created a fantastic laboratory for the future on the Saffainsel. This year, children and adults are invited to a «self-experiment with seven sweets».
In order for the pending experiments to be successful, the audience is urged not to eat anything sweet before the show. Right at the entrance to the venue, the spectators receive the first sample of the stuff sweet dreams are made of – a pretty little green leaf of the stevia plant. Further titbits, such as jelly babies, marshmallows and liquorice, are applied in order to experience the effect of sugar on the body. (kdi)
